What you Need to Know to Create an Eco-Friendly Nursery for Your Child

written by Naps n'Dreams December 30, 2017
What you Need to Know to Create an Eco-Friendly Nursery for Your Child

Did you know that indoor air is often 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air?

A greener nursery is not only good for Planet Earth, but could also be better for your child’s health.

Because babies’ immune system are still developing, they breathing a greater volume of air than adults. It’s good to make sure that the place they spend most of his time, the nursery, is environmentally friendly  so that both your baby and the planet are healthier.

1- Use VOC-Free Paint

What’s VOC? VOC’s short for Volatile Organic Compounds. Parts of finishes or manufacturing compounds escape from the object they cover–this can be furniture, flooring, walls, etc. They’re common, but they are potentially harmful chemicals that could affect the indoor’ air quality. Unfortunately, paint is often full of it. So, when coloring your child’s walls, make sure to look for “low-VOC”, or better, “VOC-free” paint.

2- Look for Greenguard Gold Certified Furniture

Often made with non-natural components and using industrial paint and glue, most furniture ends up containing many unwanted chemicals. Government requirements hold toxicity levels to be equal or under 0.05 PPM (parts per million), but Greenguard Gold certification aims for toxicity levels equal or under 0.007 PPM. So, you can trust that furniture that obtains this certification will be safe for your baby and clear of any unwanted chemical emissions.

3- Opt for Organic Bedding and Toys

Since little ones can spend up to 16 hours a day in bed, it is even more important to make sure they’re sleeping on something safe for his health. So, look for something organic, like the Essentia Mattress, for example. Made of natural components, such as heava milk, essential oils, plant extracts, water and organic cotton, you know your baby will sleep… well, like a baby! Even better, like an healthy baby! 😉

Moreover, like many children, your little one is discovering his  or her environment with all their senses, looking, touching, listening and even tasting every new toy you bring him. So, look for toys that are made with organic components such as wood, cotton or bamboo, toys that are safe for your child to explore.

4- Bring Some Fresh Air In

Opening the windows and doors is always a good idea to let some fresh air circulate into the room.

5- Clean Green

It’s not a secret, babies can be pretty messy, and cleaning up after them is a daily chore in a parent’s life. Sadly, not all cleaning products are Green. So, if you’re going to design a healthy nursery for little one, you might as well keep it green and healthy by choosing green products to clean up all those messes!
