Creating your nursery is the first milestone of many with your new baby. The ritual can help you get into nesting mode and start feeling prepared for all the upcoming changes in your life. You’ll want to ensure the space feels comfortable and designed with your little one in mind, since you’ll be spending countless moments together there.
One way to accomplish this is with DIY nursery decor. By adding these personalized touches to the room, you get a distinctive style that feels special for your baby and fits your budget. Dive into these three easy handmade wall decor ideas to get started!
DIY Baby Mobile
Materials:
- Hoop or stick (depending on the shape of the mobile you’re making)
- Cotton yarn or string
- Themed decorations, like felt animals, flowers, clouds, or pom poms
- Yarn sewing needle
Instructions:
- Make the strands by threading your yarn through your needle, then piercing your felt decorations along the yarn. Leave extra space at the top of each strand and hang the decorations at different lengths to create interest. Tie off each strand with a discrete knot.
- Attach each strand to your hoop or stick by looping the top of it around your base and tying another discrete knot.
- Tie four pieces of yarn, spaced equidistantly apart, around the hoop to hang from the ceiling. Gather these pieces at the top and knot them together, then add a fifth strand, which will hang the mobile from the ceiling, and secure it with another knot. Feel free to add an additional felt decoration at this intersection to hide the knots.
DIY Brick Walls
Materials:
- Large rectangle sponge, roughly 4 inches tall by 8 inches long
- Baby-safe, non-toxic paint in two similar shades; red tones for authentic brick or choose colors that suit your nursery
- Painter’s tray
Instructions:
- Add paint to your tray. You should have one base color and one accent color in a deeper shade to add depth. For example, you might have a rusty red base color and a deeper brick red for your accent color. First add the base color to your tray, then randomly add dashes of the deeper shade.
- Dip the long side of your sponge into the paint. You may need to swirl it around a bit to get the paint to mix in a more realistic way.
- Carefully press the sponge to your wall in a uniform row. When you move up to add the next row, alternate the bricks so that each seam between bricks falls in the middle of a solid brick in the first row. Repeat until you’ve filled your wall.
Faux brick walls can add a farmhouse boho chick look to your nursery, perfect for painting with rustic baby furniture like Natart’s Rustico collection. This nursery collection balances modern and rustic styles. All Natart furniture is Greenguard Gold Certified, ensuring low VOCs for your nursery and making Natart #1 in safety for your baby.
Nursery Memento Framed Shadow Box
Materials:
- Shadow box frame
- Mementos from baby’s early days, like sonogram photos, baby blankets, pregnancy announcements, or first outfits
- Decorative elements, like wood block letters, wallpaper, or felt animals
- Pins or a hot glue gun
Instructions:
- Add wallpaper, a thin blanket, paint, or any decorative base to the bottom of the shadow box.
- Lay your mementos on top, moving items around to balance the colors, shapes, and weights of the different items.
- Attach the mementos using pins or glue.
Adding handmade wall decor to your nursery is sure to make the space feel special and cozy. Whether you create a mobile, faux brick wall, shadow box, or all three, your DIY nursery decor will be totally unique to you and the baby.
